Standard Rules of Cabo
Each Cabo deck comes with rules cards written in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
-
Collect the lowest cards in each hand to achieve the lowest score by the end of the game.
-
Deal everyone 4 cards. Without looking, players arrange their dealt cards face down, side by side. Players may look at 2 of their cards once before the start of each round. Players’ cards may not change location once play begins. Place the remaining deck face down for the draw pile and place the top card face up next to the deck for the discard pile. Decide who goes first. In later rounds, the winner goes first, the loser shuffles and deals.
-
Taking turns in a clockwise direction, each player may take one of three actions:
1. Pick up the top card from the draw pile, look at it, and decide to either (a) replace one of their own cards face down; (b) if it's a choice card (see below), discard it, then carry out the action; or (c) discard it without use. Turn concludes and play continues clockwise.
2. Pick up the top card from the discard pile and replace one of their own cards face down. Turn concludes and play continues clockwise after discarding.
3. Call Cabo - Instead of drawing a card, a player who believes they have the lowest score may end the round by calling Cabo. All other players take one more turn. Cabo may not be called out of turn.
-
2-, 3-, or 4-of-a-kind matching face down cards may be replaced with one card from the draw or discard pile. Play continues with the remaining 3, 2, or 1 card(s) in your hand. If a match is attempted but is not a match, the turn is lost. The failed match must be shown to all players, returned to their original location and the drawn card discarded.
-
Peek: Look at one of your own cards; Spy: Look at one of another player's cards; Swap: Swap one of your own cards with one of another player's card (but no looking!).
Choice cards may be: (a) used for their action when drawn from the draw pile and discarded; (b) kept for their numerical value; or (c) discarded without use. Turn concludes and play continues clockwise. The action may not be used on cards drawn from the discard pile.
-
At the end of each round, total the points of each player's hand. The player with the lowest score wins and receives 0 points. Everyone else receives the total points of their hand. lf the player who called Cabo doesn't have the lowest score, they receive a 5 point penalty on top of their score. In the event of a tie for lowest score, the player who risked calling Cabo receives 0 points, but if neither tied player called Cabo they each receive 0 points.
-
If the draw pile runs out of cards, keep the topmost card face up and shuffle the remainder for a new draw pile.
-
Shooting the Moon - A player who ends a round with two 12s and both 13s receives 0 points and everyone else receives 50 points for that round, regardless of who called Cabo.
Score Reset - If a player’s total score hits exactly 100 points, their score resets to 50 points. This strategy may only be used once per player per game.
-
When a player exceeds 100 points, the player with the lowest score wins.
Alternate Game Play
-
Best of 3 rounds wins!
-
For the entirety of the game, “Swap” cards are counted double and allow a player to swap up to two of their cards for any two players’ cards - including two separate players

-
Each player tracks their own points using the calculator on their phone. This saves time, and no one has to do the writing and calculations.
Cabo FAQs
-
Cabo is a fast-paced card game of memory, deduction, and strategic bluffing. Players try to end each round with the lowest score by exchanging cards from the draw pile and other players - but everyone starts by only knowing half of what’s in their hand!
-
Each player has 4 face-down cards. Everyone peeks at just two of their own cards. On your turn, draw a card and either exchange it for one of your existing cards or activate a special action like "Peek," "Spy," or “Swap” to increase your knowledge of the playing field and your odds of winning. When you think you’ve got the lowest total, call “Cabo!” to end the round.
-
Cabo is great for players 8 and up, but don’t let the simple rules fool you - it’s engaging enough for adults, too!
-
Cabo supports 2 to 5 players. With a second deck, player counts can double to 10, though 5 is the official max for a singular deck.
-
A full game to 100 usually lasts around 30 minutes, but individual rounds are quick - perfect for bite-sized play sessions or as a warm-up for game night. Alternate gameplay can reduce play time to 5 or 10 minutes, and tournament rules can extend gameplay much longer.
-
Yes! The compact deck of cards fits easily in a bag or pocket, making Cabo ideal for vacations, cafes, and waiting rooms.
